Organised by the FTTH Council Europe
Copper Switch Off - Prerequisites & Data

    25 March 2025 09:30-11:00 Workshop Room 1 Session

The workshop focuses on critical parameters and stakeholder responsibilities required for a successful transition to fibre networks. Key topics include defining adequate Copper Switch-Off areas, evaluating FTTH coverage metrics such as homes passed versus homes connected, and ensuring alignment across various address databases. It also addresses the integration of complementary infrastructures, the role of regulatory and administrative entities in maintaining address data accuracy, and the identification and assessment of active fibre network operators within the Copper Switch-Off area. These considerations are vital for achieving seamless network upgrades and fostering sustainable broadband ecosystems.

Fixed Access Network Sharing (FANS): The Next Big Thing in Fibre Access?

    25 March 2025 09:30-11:00 Workshop Room 3 Session

FANS is gaining momentum with a promise of a transformational change. While end users clearly profit from the choice it brings, the FTTH operators and investors may be unclear about the benefits of infrastructure sharing and how it can boost the ARPU. The workshop will host top-tier experts who will reveal the business motivation driving – and justifying – this(r)evolutionary change.

Tools and Techniques to Secure the Quality of Your Fiber Network

    25 March 2025 09:30-11:00 Workshop Room 5 Session

A fiber network is a long-term investment, but failing to address challenges like duct system integrity and optical infrastructure quality can jeopardize its value. These challenges, if ignored, can lead to costly repairs, reduced performance, and network downtime. New tools and techniques now empower operators to overcome these issues, securing their networks while optimizing costs, speed, and performance.

Join this workshop to hear insights from CityFibre, Hexatronic/KNET, Plumettaz, and EXFO—leaders in fiber optic operations, passive solutions, cable installation equipment, and optical measurement instruments (respectively).

    Key takeaways:

    1. Discover how CityFibre secures the quality of its fiber network in the UK.
    2. Learn innovative strategies for ensuring duct infrastructure integrity with passive solutions.
    3. Explore cost-efficient, safe, and fast blown cable installation techniques.
    4. Learn how an end-to-end network lifecycle test strategy combining centralized and field testing leads to faster deployments, higher quality, and greater operational efficiency.

Going Underground: challenges and solutions for the existing fibre network

    25 March 2025 09:30-11:00 Workshop Room 6 Session

As more markets reach FTTH maturity, there are still many reasons to install additional fibre on existing routes, including:

    • Increased bandwidth demands from FTTH
    • Redundancy
    • Upgrade old cables
    • Sell spare capacity

But anyone who’s ever tried to install new cable in an existing underground pathway knows it’s much easier said than done.

This workshop will take a deep dive into the drivers behind these upgrades, the intricate challenges involved, and the practical solutions that make the very most of that precious commodity – duct space.

Our panel of thought leaders includes:

Open Eir: on the challenges of upgrading Ireland’s diverse national network

Dura-Line: on innovative deployment models like multi-use networks and dig-once

Corning: on fiber and cable solutions that push the limit on density

Plumettaz: on overriding new MicroDucts into an already occupied conduit

CETIN: on how they successfully unlocked valuable new space in their underground network in Czechia without digging.

Disaggregation of Access Networks: A Highway to New Opportunities or a Dead-End Street?

    25 March 2025 11:30-13:00 Workshop Room 5 Session

The disaggregation of FTTH networks gives rise to big promises to the telco ecosystem. But beside it being a huge shift from traditional silo-based solutions towards open, standards-based networks, is it able to address key business and technology challenges of the industry?

This workshop gathers experts of the industry (solution providers and operators) to provide expert opinion and insight into the FTTH Council's new white paper "A case for end-to-end fixed access solution disaggregation" and discuss further evolution while exploring operator use cases from Vodafone and Turk Telekom.

    • Can software-defined, community-driven solutions be beneficial for FTTH stakeholders?
    • Do cloud technologies improve business agility, automation and deployment efficiency?
    • Can operators reap the benefits of pooling technical and financial resources in communities?
    • Does disaggregation really lower cost, foster innovation and break vendor lock-in?
    • How does disaggregation enable efficient Open Access approach?
    • Evolution towards autonomous networks

Adapting business models in a shifting telecoms industry: How to remain competitive?

    25 March 2025 16:00-17:30 Conference Room 6 Session

    Introduction to workshop
by Alexis Bley, Public Affairs Manager, BREKO

With the progressive deployment of fibre networks throughout Europe, network operators will need to review their business models. How integrated should they be to maximize value? Should they be fully integrated or should they separate infrastructure and service provider business to stimulate competition and “fill the pipe” – like it is happening in numerous markets. These new market developments will likely lead to closer collaborations between network operators and ISP’s to make economies of scale while offering the most attractive services to customers. In this workshop, we will explore how this shifting telecommunications industry will look like in a few years, and what the challenges and opportunities are, both for network operators as well as ISP’s. Finally, we will also explore how investors perceive this shifting telecommunications market, and how the industry will be able to attract necessary fundings in the future.

    Speaker interventions:

    1. The increasingly important role of ISP’s in the telecommunications market of the future
by Bahnhof AB - Philipp Riederer, CEO Germany at Bahnhof

    2. How to provide innovative customer services as a network operator
by SIRO, Cian O’Mahony, Head of Operations

    3. The importance of competitive mobile offerings for fixed network operators
by EWE TEL, Matthias Büning, Head of Regulatory and Compliance

    4. How can the industry attract necessary investments to build the telecommunications market of the future?
    by DI4, Thomas Langer, Vice-President & Treasurer
