4A - FTTH & Sustainability – Taking that next step, together

    15 September 2021 09:30-11:00 online Session

The FTTH Council Europe already established fiber as being more environmentally friendly than copper. In order to decrease the environmental impact, we also have to study the entire rollout process of implementing fiber. This involves many activities, from digging trenches to setting up connections and services. The fiber value chain consists of contributions of many different parties. All these parties have different business strategies and business metrics. This workshop aims to explore and bring to light what the different drivers are for parties. In aligning these drivers we will be able to work towards sustainability goals together.

Measuring the progress within every process step and over the whole process is important to make sure we get where we want to be. In this workshop, we will discuss ways to measure, steer, and correct. The last part of the workshop will be focused on aligning the sustainability goals to the business goals of the individual parties within the value chain.

1B - Technologies to address the increased post-pandemic broadband demand

    15 September 2021 11:30-13:00 online Session

Winston Churchill once said: “Never waste a good crisis”. After a year of homeworking, we have realized that remote work can be effective and efficient. However, this is only true when we have access to first-class broadband access. In the long run, this work-from-anywhere experience may even cause a demographic shift from urban to more rural areas. Fiber access is clearly a top feature to attract these city-escapers and tourists that expect their broadband to be anywhere and of the highest quality.  In this workshop, two operators will illustrate how they see broadband demand shifting, and how they can deploy fiber cost-effectively to address this. Furthermore, we present VLEO Satellite Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access and discuss their respective use cases.

3C - Challenges & Opportunities of Fibre infrastructure convergence for 5G networks

    15 September 2021 14:00-15:30 online Session

When considering fibre infrastructure, it seems to be attractive to consider convergence between FTTH networks and 5G. However, there are key issues to take into account prior to having some degree of convergence.

We will examine the position of mobile operators and their current practices with regard to backhauling solutions. Performances of microwave links that are widely used will be taken into account as well as operational constraints.

The workshop will help identify key factors to consider in order to facilitate the use of FTTH as backhaul support and will be a base to weigh the opportunity of introducing new constraints in FTTH network design, deployment and operation.

4C - Winning the FTTH rollout race with superior customer experience

    15 September 2021 14:00-15:30 online Session

The FTTH rollout speed is drastically increasing in Europe due to high bandwidth demands fueled by Covid-19 lockdown. However, with this increased rollout speed, the customer experience is impacted and as studies have shown, the churn rates are the highest in the first two years of a customer’s lifetime. So, the question really is, how can we reduce the churn rate to run a more sustainable business?

This workshop will investigate solutions, that minimize the customer impact during fiber installation, reduce the necessary truck rolls (and therefore less “pesky” appointments) and will also have a look at how the end customer experience can be increased due to a better network availability including meshed connectivity.

    Speakers

    • Gwennael Amice, Exfo
    • James Harrison, Gigaclear
    • Walentin Lis, Corning

5C - Re-imagining the first metre, customer connection and exploring how the products and processes, enhance and accelerate network delivery solutions.

    15 September 2021 14:00-15:30 online Session

Does simplifying installation products and processes, hold the key to solving delivery challenges and increasing the speed of getting networks activated? This workshop will explore solutions that re-imagine the first metre of the network and systemise construction validation, activation and in-life visibility for monitoring all the way to the customer. This lowers the costs for advanced triage or wasted call-outs which are especially demanding in rural FTTx networks.  We will discuss how the current challenges with planning and delivering the first meter for customer connection and will provide insight on how to automate and simplify delivery across the network lifecycles.

1D - Enabling fiber densification with advanced optical cable systems

    15 September 2021 16:00-17.30 online Session

The digitalization of the European economy could find its bottleneck in the passive fiber and cable infrastructure.
As the world’s demand for information continues to increase, the passive optical network is becoming more and more a key infrastructure for any state or community.

Next-generation fibre networks become more dynamic, crowded, and limited for space; innovation on high-density cabling solutions that are physically compact, easily deployable and environmental friendly is crucial to support the data traffic growth.
In this workshop, we will review how recent advancements in cable technology and reduced diameter fibres make it possible to install an increasing number of fibres into smaller diameter ducts.

2D - Effective Scaling in exploding markets

    15 September 2021 16:00-17.30 online Session

We are now experiencing a few markets that are almost exploding in the rollout of FTTH networks, which both are thrilling and also offer a great deal of risk. The goal of this workshop is to present concrete examples and role models for how to scale up and meet the market demands, and simultaneously be selective when it comes to methods, solutions, and tools.

The three organizing companies together with the guesting companies cover together almost all sectors in the rollout and will give valuable insights, advice and examples for how to create a “factory” for an efficient rollout.

Even if many countries already have experienced high activities in the FTTH rollout, we can now see extremely high activities in a few big countries which makes this workshop relevant and valuable for many players in these markets.

4D - Belgium Vs UK, Incumbent VS Alternative Provider: A comparative story of two network operators and their experience with planning and design automation

    15 September 2021 16:00-17.30 online Session

FTTH is a fundamental part of the digital economy that is benefiting from a post-pandemic push towards broadband connectivity around the world. Each FTTH project has a specific context comprised of different variables that greatly influence processes and outcomes. Geography, labour pricing, outsourcing, open access regulations, to name a few, all play a part in defining the guidelines of an FTTH rollout. Two network operators will share their experiences in scaling up FTTH rollouts in a very short time.

Proximus, Belgiums’ incumbent, are currently in a 4 million homes connectivity journey. CityFibre, UKs’ largest alternative provider, is aiming for 8 million homes passed in a highly competitive and regulated setting. Comsof, Yungo and Fifthnet are supporting the operators with automation tools and professional services in design, engineering and construction. Together, they will compare main project enablers and barriers, share lessons learned focused around the processes, resources, and tools that help them reach their ambitious roll-out targets.

5D - The wholesale-only business model in a Gigabit Europe

    15 September 2021 16:00-17.30 online Session

On 9 March 2021 the European Commission launched the Communication “2030 Digital Compass: the European way for the Digital Decade”, which, among others, set a clear target in terms of connectivity: all EU households, both in urban and rural areas, will be covered by a Gigabit network by 2030.

The UK is seeking to achieve the same goal even earlier, by 2025. Therefore, the complete transition towards full fibre networks in Europe can no more be delayed. It is high time to consider how wholesale-only operators, who have successfully driven such transition in many European countries, can continue to play their role and expand to ensure that the above targets will be met, to the benefit of consumers, businesses and socio-economic drivers.

The workshop will highlight the various advantages of the wholesale-only business model for infrastructural investors and the challenges it faces in different countries where it has been implemented.
